Spring CAYLC Program

BMSLL

CAYLC is about to enter their 14th season.  With tryouts for the U-13s and the U-15s beginning this weekend.  In addition to the summer travel program will be offering for the first time a limited spring season.

During the course of the past couple of years I have noticed that a number of tournament teams we have competed against in the summer tournaments have become, basically year round teams.  The players play for their regular spring teams (some playing for three different teams) and for their all-star tournament teams simultaneously.  It is my firm belief that we need to do the same thing.  It may take a year or two to catch up; we just need to do this.  Since the inception of CAYLC over 80 players have gone on to play in college, mostly Division III, however, we are now starting see players sign on with top 20 Division I schools; Steven Murray with Loyola College this year, Max Pfeiffer with Notre Dame and Daniel Leib with St. Joseph’s next year.

The CAYLC spring season will be in addition to the player’s regular season with either BMSLL and/or the private schools seasons.  We will practice occasionally on Sundays after the BMSLL games and that will be it.  The spring teams will play their games on Saturdays, 6-8 games, and most at home when UVA has a home game.  We did not get into the new National Premier Youth Lacrosse League this year, but have been assured we will next year.  We will compete against some the teams from the new league, mainly in March.  The April games will be against teams from Virginia.  The March games Baltimore and Maryland.

Tryouts for the 13's and 15's will be this coming weekend and next weekend.  The 13's will go at noon each day and the 15's will go at 2:00 PM, all tryouts will at the STAB Turf Field located on the Lower School campus just off Rt. 250.  I realize that with basketball and other activities making all four may be difficult, that said, I think your son needs to be at as many as possible.

I would like to get these two teams settled and in place for a couple of reasons, one- to be ready to play games in March and April and to prepare for the summer season, two- to allow time to get the other four teams, U-9, U-11, U-16 and the High School put together by the end of April and to be able to prepare those teams for the summer season.  These tryouts will begin the weekend after Easter.  The teams will be selected by a selection group lead by me.  Coaches will be assigned shortly there after.  I am hoping to coach the U-13's.  These teams will also compete in the Select Division of the 2nd Annual Nolan Jenkins Memorial Youth Lacrosse Tournament.  Since I will be writing the tournament schedule, this will not pose a problem for anyone.  In short, BMSLL teams will play in morning and the CAYLC teams will play late afternoon and at night.

CAYLC's vision/mission has been to provide the boys with a fun learning experience that will allow them to improve their skills and become better players by competing with teams from all over.  To a certain degree that has been accomplished, we still have a ways to go and things like starting a spring season and participating in the NPYLL in the future will only benefit the entire local lacrosse community down the road.

I will have a handout at the tryouts breaking down the fees.  The summer fees have dropped a bit from last year, family discounts and scholarships will also be available.  We really are on the cusp of putting Charlottesville on the lacrosse map for more than just UVA; in fact, I have received several phone calls from tournament directors wanting CAYLC to participate in their events this summer.

I have attached this year’s proposed summer schedule.  You will notice that we are not playing on as many consecutive weekends as we have in the past.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments that you may have.  Otherwise, we hope to see you and your sons at some point this weekend and next weekend.  This has the makings to be blast for the boys.

Best regards,
Bob
